Tucked in between Donaukanal and the Danube, Brigittenau is the gateway to the northwest of Vienna. This lively district ben- efits from its central location, many opportunities for shopping and eating out, and direct access to the water. However, the district’s intriguing urban development projects make the Twentieth District especially attractive. The Twentieth District is lively, multicultural, and densely populat- ed. What it lacks in trendiness, it makes up for in local charm. The area around Wallensteinplatz might have its many bars, shops, and restaurants at any price range, but other areas of Brigittenau have their own unbeatable feature – their immediate proximity to the water. One side of the district borders Donaukanal, turning into a greened promenade and cycleway towards the city centre, while the other benefits from a three-kilometre waterfront overlooking the Danube. The increasing attractiveness of Brigittenau as a residential district and its abundance of space available for inner-city development have led to a lot of construction activity in recent years.

One example especially worth noting is the urban development area around the Nordwestbahnhof railway station, which involves repurposing the area from a freight transshipment point to a new urban district and is beginning to take shape. A climate-friendly, socially varied residential and working district is to emerge here by 2035 with some 6,500 apartments for around 16,000 inhabitants. The Grüne Mitte , or Green Centre, is to form the core of the area; this is a ten-hectare open park-like area for a variety of recreational and lei- sure opportunities with foot and cycle paths but no continuous roads. The gateway to the Nordwestbahnhof railway station site is now being developed on the site of what used to be a large car dealership. The first construction phase in the southeastern part of the site will be due for kick-off in 2026 with the first completions expected in 2028. Growing interest in residential areas near the most important thoroughfare, the nearby Dresdner Straße, has been increasing for some time, reflecting the benefits of steady upgrades to the district. Locations near the U6 and U4 metro lines are also in heavy demand. Current projects are located on Traisengasse, Jägerstraße, Denisgasse, and Leystraße.
