Like neighbouring Ottakring, Hernals benefits from its internal diversity. The Seventeenth District combines tradition, moder- nity, coolness, and elegance in a blend of cosmopolitan chic and uptown sophistication. A remarkable demographic diversity dominates Hernals as reflect- ed in the different character of each quarter. Neighbourhoods from the peak and late Wilhelminian eras meet social housing complexes, charming cottage districts, and historical centres. The urban part of the district between Hernalser Hauptstraße and Elterleinplatz is especially popular with younger target groups as it provides attractive hotspots offering attractions such as the expansive Postsportplatz recreational area. The new U5 metro line plays a major role in boosting the attractiveness of the housing market in this area. This future improvement in transport links will make the district extremely interesting for developers and home buyers, especially in the areas along the
metro extension. The district benefits from a variety of new pro- jects emerging throughout the district such as on Lacknergasse, Weißgasse, Helblinggasse, and towards Dornbach/Neuwaldegg and Schafberg, for instance at Zeillergasse 2 and the Wohnen am Schafberg project at Zwerngasse 49. Infill development within courtyards should also be encouraged in the future. Hernals gains more of an elegant ambience from Wattgasse outbound along Alszeile. This is where the northwestern part of the Seventeenth District borders on the green Vienna Woods with their hiking trails, picnic areas, and city views. The Dornbach and Neuwaldegg quarters radiate a village atmosphere, and are amongst the city’s most upmarket locations with their villas and exclusive new buildings. The aim is to preserve the green and recreational areas and to enable the development of building sites for additional living space in the Kleiner Schafberg urban area, which mainly consists of single-family houses and allotment garden quarters.
