The Fifteenth District is located outside the Vienna Beltway and is therefore technically an outlying district, but its dynamic development has given it qualities very close to those of a central district. It’s all about location, and Vienna downtown is just as easy to reach from here as the city limits. The district also benefits from excellent transport connections with three metro lines (U3, U4, and U6) as well as local and national train services. Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus has remained true as a young and mul- ticultural district for many years, and is becoming increasingly attractive with its central location and the refurbishment projects in its up-and-coming traditional Viennese grätzel neighbour- hoods. Housing prices here are still affordable, so this favourable development ensures increasing demand for residential proper- ties in the district. There are currently few development projects; development activity focuses more on refurbishment and expan- sion of many of the old tenements. These projects include Secret Garden on Dingelstedtgasse, Schokoladenfabrik on Meiselstraße, and 4TY-TWO on Herklotzgasse. Development projects also include those on Linke Viennazeile and Mariahilfer Straße.
There is a lot of urban development happening in the Fifteenth District. The redesign of the Westbahnhof railway station, known beyond district boundaries for its diverse shopping and dining options, has been completed, and further improvements are planned. These include Äußere Mariahilfer Straße to be rede- signed as a one-way street for outbound motor traffic. A struc- turally separated two-way cycle lane will be laid with pedestrians benefiting from wider pavements, trees, and greenery providing shade on hot summer days. Completion of the first section is planned for summer 2025. The Mitte 15 urban development concept aims towards making the district greener and more liveable, adding another high- light. The project area extends from Märzstraße in the north to Mariahilfer Straße and Linzer Straße in the south, and from the Neubaugürtel section of the Vienna Beltway in the east to Rump- fgasse in the west. The aim of this project is to create new green and open spaces, remove existing barriers caused by railway installations, and improve climate protection and climate change adaptation.
