Vienna’s Thirteenth District has lots of space and greenery in immediately apparent contrast to its neighbouring districts. Most of its streets are characterised by front gardens and tree- lined avenues, while extensive green spaces and recreational areas such as Schloss Schönbrunn palace, Roter Berg recrea- tional area, and Lainzer Tiergarten wildlife preserve add charm to the district. No wonder Hietzing is regarded as an extremely attractive residential area, especially among families. Hietzing benefits not only from its generous green spaces, the Thirteenth District also has a multitude of other attractions to offer. Historic buildings such as Schloss Schönbrunn palace as well as the Klimt and Hermes villas are attractive destinations for a visit, while various concept stores and trendy cafés in Alt-Hietzing are ideal for a relaxed stroll. The traditional restaurants and coffee houses that have long since become true institutions at the centre of Hietzing attract visitors from far beyond the district’s boundaries. Vienna’s uptown west

residential units are limited due to the scarcity of building land available and can hardly meet the high demand for residential housing in Hietzing. The development projects that exist, for in- stance, aufleben on Auhofstraße, TWIN Estates on Köchelgasse, and Villa Nobilis on Hietzinger Hauptstraße, are usually small and exclusive. Das Noah on Lainzer Straße is a new development project on a larger scale; completed in 2024, this is a prominent exception to the rule. Various new projects are also planned near Lainz and Speisinger Straße. Hietzing may consist of more than seventy percent green space – which is exceptionally high for Vienna –, but the district still fo- cuses on green landscaping and places where people can meet. The popular and busy Westernspielplatz playground on Künigl- berg park is undergoing complete refurbishment after fourteen years. The zoning and development plan for Hörndlwald is also in the process of amendment. The previously designated zoning areas will be removed and added to the forest and meadow belt conservation area for longer-term nature preservation.
